Agricultural Department


This department is engaged in the enforcement of Food & Agriculture and Weights & Measures laws of the state of California. We perform inspections for compliance with these laws, issue permits and certificates where required. These activities provide public services and protection that taxpayers cannot individually provide for themselves. All agricultural and weights and measures programs are mandated by state law. This office also administers state mandated animal control functions, tansy ordinance enforcement and mosquito control. Agricultural functions include: port and domestic quarantine; pest survey & detection; fruit, vegetable, nut & honey quality control; nursery inspection; noxious weed survey & control; regulation of pest control operators, advises  dealers; pesticide use enforcement; crop statistics; plant export certification; egg, seed and apiary inspection. Weights & measures functions include: quantity control of packaged goods; scale and measuring device inspection for accuracy; petroleum products and weigh-master enforcement, brake fluid & anti-freeze quality enforcement and bread law enforcement. Animal control functions include: licensing dogs; operating the county dog pound; maintaining dog license and rabies vaccination records; impounding stray dogs and large animals; investigating dog bites and quarantining biting dogs; investigating large animal loose or nuisance complaints; enforcing Del Norte County Animal Control Ordinance dealing with public nuisance, potentially dangerous or vicious dogs, licensing kennels; as well as enforcing other state animal laws concerning their care and keep; investigating violations of humane laws, picking up and disposing of small dead animals on county roadways; picking up injured domestic animals and arranging for veterinarian care or euthanasia if owner cannot be contacted.
