Periodically, the Del Norte County Service Area No. 1 (CSA-1) conducts smoke testing to identify potential issues within the sanitary sewer collection system. During testing, smoke is typically visible at roof vents and locations where there are broken or damaged sewer mains, laterals, clean outs, or prohibited connections. Identifying and correcting these problems helps reduce groundwater and stormwater infiltration, which can otherwise consume valuable pipe and pump capacity and increase the volume of wastewater requiring treatment at the City of Crescent City’s wastewater treatment plant.
The smoke the CSA-1 uses to smoke test is non-toxic. It is similar to smoke used in special effects at parties, festivals, and concerts.
The CSA-1 intends to inform the public of smoke testing prior to and while it is occurring.
SEWER SMOKE TESTING IS SCHEDULED TO BEGIN JULY 13, 2026 AND WILL CONTINUE FOR ABOUT A MONTH IN THE AREA NORTH OF THE CRESCENT CITY LIMITS (e.g., El Dorado Street, Harding Avenue, Inyo Street, Northcrest Drive, Pacific Avenue, Pebble Beach Drive, Washington Boulevard). Questions or concerns should be directed to the Engineering and Surveying Division at 707-464-7229 or engineering@co.del-norte.ca.us.
