Tobacco Use Prevention Program (TUPP)

The Del Norte County Tobacco Use Prevention Program (TUPP) is funded by the California Tobacco Tax Initiative (Prop 99) and the Research and Prevention Tobacco Tax Act (Prop 56) with program oversight provided by the California Tobacco Control Program (CTCP). The overall goal of the program is to reduce involuntary exposure to second-hand smoke and to provide outreach and education to the public on the harms of tobacco use.

The program obtains its local objectives from community members and then studies and surveys local tobacco trends to assist in local policy development. Current objectives  include:

  • Facilitating the establishment of smoke-free apartment communities
  • Limiting tobacco promoting influences
  • Limiting the location of where one can use and obtain tobacco products
  • Promoting cessation services

Numerous organizations have adopted smoke-free/tobacco-free policies throughout Del Norte County and recently the City of Crescent City adopted a smoke-free multiunit housing ordinance to ban smoking within units and common areas. Because of these policy adoptions, Del Norte County is making its way to becoming a healthier community.

New Tobacco Law - SB 793

According to the California Department of Public Health, Senate Bill (SB) 793 (Chapter 34, Statutes of 2020), which prohibits tobacco retailers from selling most flavored tobacco products, will be effective as of December 21, 2022. Under this new tobacco law, a tobacco retailer, their agents, or employees who violate this law will be guilty of an infraction and fined $250 for each violation.
