The Del Norte County Tobacco Use Prevention Program (TUPP) is funded by the California Tobacco Tax Initiative (Prop 99) and the Research and Prevention Tobacco Tax Act (Prop 56) with program oversight provided by the California Tobacco Control Program (CTCP). The overall goal of the program is to reduce involuntary exposure to second-hand smoke and to provide outreach and education to the public on the harms of tobacco use.
The program obtains its local objectives from community members and then studies and surveys local tobacco trends to assist in local policy development. Current objectives include:
Numerous organizations have adopted smoke-free/tobacco-free policies throughout Del Norte County and recently the City of Crescent City adopted a smoke-free multiunit housing ordinance to ban smoking within units and common areas. Because of these policy adoptions, Del Norte County is making its way to becoming a healthier community.
For assistance with adopting or implementing smoke-free or tobacco-free policies, please contact the TUPP staff at the Public Health Branch.
If you would like to help reduce tobacco-related disparities in Del Norte County, please consider participating in the Tobacco Free Del Norte Coalition. More information can be found at the website: Tobacco Free Del Norte Coalition
