The mission of the Del Norte County Office of Emergency Services is to leverage community partnerships and available resources to protect and preserve life, environment, property, culture, and economy in the face of all-hazards; to prevent and alleviate human suffering and to sustain the unique character of Del Norte County for future generations.
We envision a Del Norte community that is strong and resilient in the face of all threats. This strength is based in strong partnerships built on respectful and inclusive communication, and personal preparedness engrained within our community culture as a way of life.
To promote community preparedness through training, education, and exercise; to mitigate the impacts of future disasters by incorporating emergency management concepts and risk analysis into future planning efforts and infrastructure design; to support, facilitate, and coordinate emergency service response to emergencies and disasters; and to recover and adapt to disasters quickly and thoroughly by utilizing the whole of community approach to ensure the needs of all are met.
Hazard mitigation is the use of long-term and short-term policies, programs, projects, and other activities to alleviate the death, injury, and property damage that can result from a disaster. Del Norte County and a partnership of local and tribal governments within the county have developed a hazard mitigation plan to reduce risks from natural disasters in the Del Norte County Operational Area—defined as the unincorporated county, incorporated cities, special purpose districts and areas for which tribal planning partners are authorized to govern, develop, or regulate. The plan complies with federal and state hazard mitigation planning requirements to establish eligibility for funding under Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) grant programs for all planning partners. The two-volume plan is available for review and download in .pdf format.
The Del Norte Community Alert System powered by Everbridge makes sure you know about issues that may affect your safety. This system allows Emergency Services to contact thousands of residents in seconds so you can find out about an emergency right away.
